I have an issue with the latest practice of novelists publishing portions of their books as part/volume 1,2, 3 etc when in fact the volumes are actually more chapters of a single book.If you have not read The DEAD LOOP 1, I highly recommend that you go back and do so. If you haven't purchased any in the collection, then I recommend that you purchase The DEAD LOOP: Complete Trilogy Edition, as it includes all three parts of the story. If you already have parts 1 and 2, may I recommend that you go ahead and purchase The DEAD LOOP 3: DELIVERANCE, because you will need it to finish the story.
Which brings me back to "The Dead Loop 2: Dark Times". It begins the "day" after book 1 ends. In this book Ewan discovers that he has absolute freedom to do whatever he wants within the day, with no consequences for the next day. The only price is by the end of the day, Ewan will die. This portion of the story is an introspection for Ewan. It is the age old question: If you could commit any crime, without anyone ever finding out and without any repercussions, would you commit it?
While the author does plays with this question I feel he did not delve into it far enough. The ending of this portion came so abruptly and I am still not sure, how far Ewan would have been willing to go if he had more days to play with.
While I would not recommend purchasing this story as a stand alone. I do recommend purchasing the entire story as I found it quite thought provoking. (The only issue is the horrible editing of the 3rd installment)

Yes! Book 2 did a very nice job anxiously grabbing you into the psychological struggle of Ewan Charles and what might be the cause of his daily demises. Now, you are meeting some of the same characters which makes you wonder what might be truly happening in his life. It ended well and I am grabbing book 3 very quickly!
The second installment in this trilogy picks up seamlessly from where the first book ended. Ewan is still dying every day without understanding why and finding himself awaking in a new place, sometimes with his family which are the times he treasures most although they can end horribly and sometimes in other places that are unfamiliar to him. To watch him try to adjust to being in a new situation everyday is fascinating even though as his head seems to clear he appears to have at least a basic grasp of what's going on around him at that time.
Virgil gets darker and more controlling in this book and exerts more influence and pressure on Ewan trying it appears to turn his "adventures" into more negative and evil ones. It seems Virgil is bored and becoming depraved just running wild and is looking for kicks any place he can find them while trying to drag Ewan along.
I still don't know exactly where the author is taking us on this ride, but it's sure fun trying to figure it out. I can't wait for the next and final installment The DEAD LOOP 3 DELIVERANCE which I've already picked up.
