Since I don't care for books or movies with supernatural elements I found this one stupid. If that doesn't bother you, maybe you will like it. I was just looking for a book focusing on Egypt.
Victorian horror story, a lagging mystery,and a twist predictable from the beginning. Used Moses and the Exodus account as a spring board into occultism (in my defense that didn't come till the end of the book) and sci-fi. Just confusing. Weird and not worth the read. Sort of makes the ancient Egyptian gods power players today, while forgetting they were proved powerless in Moses' day. Read Exodus instead.
Recommended by an article in the WSJ. I liked it. Well written. Good plot.Not overly silly. Quick read. Worth the effort
This 1899 novel was one of the first-- perhaps *the* first-- horror novels about an undead Egyptian mummy seeking vengeance on the European archaeologists who desecrated his tomb. If you can get past the Victorian-era prose, the story is an exciting one. And there is an interesting (albeit perhaps unintended) level of subtext to the book; in Pharos's threats, I detect a hint of the revolutionary fervor which was to sweep away most of the British Empire in the 20th Century "Ah, my nineteenth-century friend, your father stole me from the land of my birth, and from the resting-place the gods decreed for me; but beware, for retribution is pursuing you, and is even now close upon your heels.”
